Travanna Lewis, a ninth grader at the Digital Pioneers Academy in DC, became the first recipient of a $ 25,000 college scholarship through the city’s Take the Shot DC program to receive a COVID-19 vaccination.

Travanna is the first of eight fellowship recipients of the program, the WTOP reported. All children aged 12-17 years who received the coronavirus vaccine participate in the random drawing of the scholarship.

About 58% of DC residents who are 12-15 years old have received at least one dose of the vaccine, slightly more than the percentage of 16- and 17-year-olds, the WTOP reported.

Travanna’s mother, Wendy Lewis, said she was thrilled that her daughter received the scholarship.

“I was actually unaware of the scholarship,” Lewis said, the WTOP reported. “I am very fortunate to have received this opportunity for her – I am very proud of her.”
