A ‘cruel and jealous’ medical student disguised herself in a fat suit and threw sulfuric acid in her ex-boyfriend’s face in a ‘deliberate, malicious and appalling’ attack on her doorstep.

Talented junior doctor Rym Alaoui suffered ‘unimaginable’ and life-changing injuries to her face, neck and chest when Milad Rouf threw the corrosive substance at her in Brighton earlier this year.

The 25-year-old wore padded clothes, make-up and sunglasses to make himself look like a black woman of larger build before knocking on the door.

Lewes Crown Court heard that the disguise proved to be effective, and Dr. Alaoui, also 25, did not recognize him when she opened it a moment before he started the attack.

She was rushed to Royal Sussex County Hospital, where she worked, and was treated by shocked colleagues.

In a statement, Dr. Alaoui: ‘Since the day I was exposed to this terrible attack, my life has changed enormously, where I live in constant physical and mental pain, fear of my future well-being and socio-economic difficulties.

‘I have been robbed for many years of my career and my life as an adult. I can not begin to imagine how or why anyone could commit such a horrible, deliberate assault. ‘

She said she fears her career as a doctor may no longer be open to her.

Rouf pleaded guilty to maliciously throwing sulfuric acid at his ex-girlfriend with the intent to mutilate and shame her. He received an extended sentence of 11 years.

Prosecutor Flora Page told the court that Rouf and Dr. Alaoui had dated briefly while studying together in Cardiff, but she had ended the relationship and moved to the city of East Sussex, where she began working as a junior doctor.

Instead of moving on, Rouf spent weeks planning his attack before traveling to Brighton on 20 May.

Photos released by police show handwritten shopping lists for various costumes found in his apartment.

Mrs Page said: ‘Using padded clothes and make-up, he made himself look like a black woman of large build.

‘At the time of the attack at 4.15pm he was dressed in black and was wearing a face mask, sunglasses and a face shield.’

Rouf showed her a threatening note written on a pillow – taking care not to speak and leave – before throwing 60% concentrate of sulfuric acid in her face as she bent down to read it.

Despite the fact that she quickly thought of going straight to the shower to wash it off, and the actions of medical staff, she has been left with devastating injuries.

Judge Christine Laing QC judged him, saying the trauma Dr Alaoui had suffered was ‘unimaginable’.

She added: ‘You bought sulfuric acid, as an intern you would far better than most know the devastating consequences that have when applied to the human body.’

Judge Laing said Rouf acted out of ‘simple jealousy and anger at being rejected’.

After the hearing, investigating officer Rose Horan said: ‘This was a deliberate, malicious and shocking incident and I would like to thank the victim for having shown such incredible bravery and dignity throughout. She has been inspiring and we continue to support her in this difficult time.

‘The evidence we were able to uncover in this case showed that Rouf spent a long time planning this calculated attack.

‘He changed his whole appearance in an intricate attempt to get away with this cruel act.’
