New Balance x J.Crew 992 ‘NEW’ New York Sneakers release date, price and where to buy

Say the words “New York” to a particular subgroup of people, and they will definitely add “City” at the end, all on their own. Even if you’ve never set foot in Manhattan or Brooklyn or the Bronx or Queens – or if you are really adventurous, Staten Island—you probably know at least one person who considers the five boroughs the whole scope of New York. But there is much more to it than that, a fact that anyone who knows someone who talks about “going up the state” can constantly attest to.

There are Catskills and Adirondacks. There are cozy little towns tucked away, not far from the Hudson. Hell, there’s even Albany. New York – the city, the state, it all – contains quantities. And today, New Balance and J.Crew pay tribute to it all.

If you know NB, you might be scratching your head right now. Wait, are not people from Boston? Yep, you’m right. But J.Crew is based in New York, and apparently the collaboration ties were enough to convince the Massachusetts contingent to put aside any Red-Sox-versus-Yankees-style rivalry and work on a shoe that draws inspiration from the state flag. New York, plus the rugged landscapes you can find as you head out of the subway area (or just into Central Park). Keep an eye out for the blue and orange you’ll find on the flag – or on a Knicks game – accompanied by a rich brown suede and a chewing gum outsole that serves as fairly direct references to the natural world beyond skyscrapers.

Call it the best of both worlds if you will. Or just call it another safe-to-sell-out release from the collaborative relationship, we are all glad we did not hit the steps during the pandemic. But whatever you do, do not hesitate if you want a pair for yourself. Like every other thing in New York (at least in the city) these sneakers need to go fast.
