A Toronto rapper wanted for several months in connection with the North York murder of a 20-year-old has been arrested in Los Angeles.
Hassan Ali, better known by his nickname Top5, was arrested by Los Angeles police on Thursday, Toronto police said in a press release. He is wanted in this city for murder in the first degree as well as three cases of non-compliance with bail.
Ali was one of two men arrested and charged after the January 31 shooting that left Hashim Omar Hashi dead.
Police earlier said Hashi, described by family and friends as “humble, friendly and hardworking”, was shot several times as he tried to enter a parking garage in the Jane Street and Falstaff Avenue area. He died on the spot.
Ali was initially charged with accessories after the murder, two counts of non-compliance with probation, as well as three drug-related offenses. However, the charges against him were upgraded in May to include first-degree murder.
Ali was released from custody in March and lived under house arrest with an electric ankle monitor that tracks his whereabouts, but investigators later claimed he cut off his ankle bracelet and dropped it at the western end of town.
Ali had not been seen since.
