Soft spirits

Soft Spirits, a bottle store in Echo Park, opens October 9th. It will offer blenders, tonics and other components to build a cocktail, but the entire store will be non-alcoholic. Owner Jillian Barkley started Soft Spirits as an Instagram account that focused on non-alcoholic spirits – which often distills herbs and spices to replicate alcohol profiles. She plans to sell 60 to 80 brands, including non-alcoholic beer and wine, and spirits such as Kin, Ghaia, Wilfred and Lyre’s Dry London Spirit. Open from 11 to 19 Wednesday to Friday and 10 to 19 Saturday and Sunday.

Katsu Sando SGV

Chinatown’s Japanese sandwich shop is heading east. The fast-paced Katsu Sando restaurant, with its dairy sandwiches, curries, salads and onigiri, will open another location in 2022. The new San Gabriel outpost houses a larger kitchen, allowing for new dishes and Katsu Sando’s limited and seasonal items, eg. oxtail hashashiris to be regularly displayed on the menu. Fast-and-casual fare will still be available, as will the konbini fridge, but the other Katsu Sando will offer on-site dining and, co-owner Daniel Son hopes, more space to bake bread, run R&D and serve beer and wine. He is aiming for a spring launch.
