White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki assured reporters on Friday that President Biden’s persistent cough is a result of allergies and not a more serious medical condition.
Biden, who turns 79 next month, coughed and cleared his throat repeatedly on Friday during public remarks, including at an event on the White House lawn with Interior Minister Deb Haaland.
Biden and his doctor previously attributed his frequent hacking when speaking in public to either the common cold or the effects of gastric reflux.
“He is doing well. He has some allergies, ”said Psaki as she walked away from the podium at her daily briefing and answered a shouted question from journalist Brian Karem.
Biden has not yet honored the tradition of announcing the results of an annual presidential meeting.
The boss’s cough chief has repeatedly raised health concerns. NBC News reporter Kelly O’Donnell asked Psaki last month about it.
“Many of us were in the East Room watching the president. We have seen him on many occasions where he has a recurrent cough. How is the situation with that cough? And is that a concern? Asked veteran journalist Psaki.
“It’s not a concern,” Psaki said. “Of course we have a doctor who travels with him, who checks in if there is – it is ever justified. And certainly that is still the case, as it has been since the beginning of his presidency. ”
O’Donnell, who this year was elected chairman of the White House correspondent association, with a term beginning in 2023, put further pressure on Psaki.
“Is there an explanation for why he coughed so often in situations like that? I’m sure you saw it, ”the reporter asked.
“I did,” Psaki said. “I do not think it is a problem.”
Psaki added: “I think there are a number of reasons why we may need to clear our throats or we may have a mild cold. And that’s certainly something presidents, elected officials, journalists, spokesmen can confront, but it’s not an area where we have a medical concern. ”
The explanation for Biden’s frequent cough has changed over time.
In December 2020, the then-elected president said, “I have a little cold, sorry.”
A report from 2019 from his doctor, dr. Kevin C. O’Connor, accused gastro-esophageal reflux.
“Biden is a healthy, strong, 77-year-old man who is fit to successfully perform the duties of the presidency,” O’Connor wrote.
The doctor wrote that gastric acid reflux can “contribute to occasional coughing and congestion of the sinuses”, and that “[Biden] have received endoscopy to rule out a more significant disease. ”
