Canberra chef Matt Breis is currently a Free Plant Officer at Yarralumla Nursery

Matt Breis had been a chef in Canberra for 11 years; during the COVID-19 pandemic, however, he was out of work.

Through the Jobs for Canberrans initiative, he was able to exchange his kitchen utensils for garden tools and embrace his passion for gardening.

Of the ACT Government Jobs for the Canberran Fund was created in 2020 to provide job opportunities for those significantly affected by COVID-19.

Initially launched with over 150 job opportunities, Canberrans seeking short-term or casual employment were encouraged to register their interest and apply for vacancies via a Random job registers on the ACT Government COVID-19 website.

To date, the fund has created more than 520 new jobs to make Canberrans work as part of the ACT Jobs and Economic Recovery Plan.

Thanks to Jobs for the Canberran Fund, Matt is now a Free Issue Officer at Yarralumla Nursery School, helping ACT residents claim their free plants when they buy a new apartment block.

“Because of changing circumstances and the Jobs for Canberrans scheme, I have had the opportunity to get into my passion, which is gardening and gardening,” Matt said.

“As a chef, I worked with my hands, which also gave me a lot of attention to detail, and I have been able to take advantage of working with the plants.”

The Free Plant Issue Scheme has been helping to green ACT streets and gardens since 1930. All people who have purchased a new apartment block in ACT are eligible for a Yarralumla Nursery Plant allocation for free.

“The planning program is a great opportunity for people to save some money and kickstart their garden,” Matt said.

New landowners can choose up to $ 220 worth of plants per acre. Block by selecting one of three packages.

  • Package A: 20 x 140 mm pots
  • Package B: 10 x 200 mm pots
  • Package C: 10 x 140 mm and 5 x 200 mm pots.
