Newcastle United’s new owners have discussed the prospect of buying Jesse Lingard and Eric Bailly from Manchester United in January, according to reports.

Following the takeover of St James’ Park this week, Newcastle are now the richest club in world football, as Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) has assets worth £ 320 billion.

Amanda Staveley, who headed the consortium that funded the takeover and is now director of Newcastle United, has already promised that the squad will be strengthened.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Newcastle’s new hierarchy is considering a move for Lingard in the next transfer window, though they are unsure whether the United midfielder would be willing to make the move as he had already turned them down at West Ham last season.

Earlier this week, Lingard, who has only played three matches as a substitute in the Premier League this season, suggested that he may have to leave United to secure a place in England’s World Cup squad next year.

‘Of course the World Cup is far away, but you need regular football. I was so close to going to the euro and I think it plays a huge role and that’s a big factor, ‘said Lingard.

‘If you play over 20 or 25 matches, you know you’re knocking on the door. I’m not hurting at the moment – if I keep performing well, you never know what might happen, so I’m sure of myself, and when I get time on the field, I’ll keep doing it, I’m doing.

‘You want to start games. When I’m a sub, I’m always ready to play. That’s one of the things I’m going through at the moment, but I believe in recent performance hopefully we will see a change in the next few weeks. ‘

In the meantime is The Northern Echo reports that Bailly is also on Newcastle United’s shortlist with the club’s hierarchy eager to improve their defensive options before the end of the season.

Bailly has not yet joined Manchester United in the Premier League this season and has so far played only a single appearance in the Carabao Cup.

Ivory Coast International is now facing increased competition for a place on Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s side following United’s decision to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid this summer.

Speaking in May, Bailly insisted he would not be happy with a small role at United and would push to leave if he did not get a permanent role at Solskjær.

Meanwhile, the Telegraph reports that Newcastle are also targeting Burnley center-back James Tarkowski.

It is claimed that the defender will ‘likely’ join Newcastle in the January transfer window and is ‘eager for the move’.

Tarkowski’s current contract expires at the end of the season, and it is understood that Burnley are willing to sell the 28-year-old in January.
