So far, only 14 companies – out of 27,500 inspected – have been fined by the city for disobeying new vaccination rules.
The $ 1,000 fines paid so far came when a further 6,760 businesses were warned not to enforce the city’s mandate, requiring patrons to provide proof of vaccination to enter places such as restaurants, bars, museums and theaters.
The city refused to identify the violators.
City companies disregarding the mandate face a warning, followed by a $ 1,000 fine for the first offense, $ 2,000 for the second and $ 5,000 for each additional offense.
Enforcement of the mandate began on September 13 after a week-long public service advertising campaign.
Just days later, three tourists in Texas allegedly attacked a restaurant hostess who had asked for proof of vaccination or questioned the legitimacy of the trio’s documents. The tourists who denied the allegations were arrested.
Enforcement statistics come as a new website showcased a list of 61 businesses it promises “will not enforce vaccination mandates,” an effort the city slammed as dangerous.
“We’re not trying to get people sick around here,” a city spokesman said, referring to the place whose address Posten is withholding.
But the place’s creator, who only gave his name as Josh, defended the effort.
“For those who are unvaccinated or do not have identification, the companies on this site are the only places they can go out and eat with their family,” said Josh, who launched the site with his wife.
“Is it dangerous for these companies to be up there?” he asked. “Yes it is. And we all understand that reality. We are basically dealing with a list that says it is the New York City companies that are not in line.”
“It’s really not about money for most of these companies,” Josh added. “They are there for a fight. I do not think they care about that. They do not want to deny any service for any reason. ”
A spokesman for de Blasio, Mitch Schwartz, said in a statement: “It is strange and disappointing that some people are crowd-pleasing ways to make New York City less safe from COVID-19. The vast majority of companies have made a smooth transition to the key to NYC, and we will continue to act against those who have not. Thanks for the tip. ”
