Police at the scene of a murder in Oxford

A man was stabbed to death near a crematorium, triggering a murder investigation and the hunt for at least one suspect.

Rescue services were called to the scene in Barton, Oxford shortly before 6pm on Friday after receiving reports that a man had been stabbed.

The man, who investigators say was in his 30s, died of his injuries at the scene.

His relatives have been informed and supported by officers. No arrests have been made.

Thames Valley Police have since launched a homicide investigation and are appealing for witnesses and those who may have dashcam footage from the scene to come forward.

Senior investigating officer, Detective Inspector Nick Hind, from the Thames Valley Police’s Major Crime Unit, said he thought the man and the suspect were known to each other and did not believe there was a major threat to the local community.

He said there would be a “significant police presence” in the area in the coming days and urged anyone with concerns or information to speak to officers in the area.

A spokesman said: “Tonight (8/10) Thames Valley Police have launched a homicide investigation following the death of a man in Oxford.

“Officers were called just before 6pm today for reports of a man being stabbed in Bayswater Road, Barton.

“Unfortunately, the victim, a man in his thirties, died of his injuries on the spot.

“The relatives of the victim have been informed and supported by officers.”

Hind said: “Tragically, a man has suffered serious injuries as a result of an incident tonight.

“First of all, our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim who has died.

“We are in the very early stages of this investigation and we are working to determine the circumstances of exactly what happened.

“We have a large stage guard in place in the Bayswater Road area of ​​Oxford and the adjacent park.







“Bayswater Road is currently closed from the crematorium to Waynflete Road, and this area and park is likely to remain cordoned off for a considerable period while our investigation continues.

“At this early stage of our investigation, we have not made any arrests and I would appeal to anyone with information or who witnessed the incident to contact the 101st Force, citing incident reference 1694 of 8 October.

“If you were driving in the area and had a dash cam, you can check this and contact the police if it has caught anything that could help us.

“There will be a significant police presence in the area in the coming days, and I would encourage anyone with concerns or information to speak to officers in the area.

“I understand that this incident will cause great concern in the local community, but at this early stage of the investigation I believe that the victim and the perpetrator were known to each other and I do not think there is a greater threat to the local community.

“I would like to take this opportunity to assure people that we have launched a thorough investigation to identify and arrest those responsible.”
