Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has predicted Liverpool will be one of the frontrunners to win the Champions League this season.

The Reds opened their European campaign with back-to-back victories over AC Milan and Porto, and have a double header against Atletico Madrid on the horizon.

In contrast, Man United tasted away defeat to Young Boys in their first match before scraping past Europa League winners Villarreal at home for the last time.

Scholes says that despite not wanting to admit it, he believes Liverpool and local rivals Manchester City are the teams he wants to win the Champions League in this period.

“I think Liverpool or Man City will win it,” Scholes said on the Webby & O’Neill Youtube channel.

He added: “As much as you do not want to say, these are the two teams that look best in the Champions League.

“Okay, City went to PSG and beat 2-0, but they could easily have won it and were by far the best team.

“You just think that City will at some point cross the line, they have been knocking on the door for the last couple of years.

“We do not want that to happen, but they are a top-class team. Liverpool, again, also a brilliant team. ”

Scholes went on to express the concerns he has with Man United this season and why they are still tracking behind Liverpool in an important division.

“I think (Scott) McTominay is the best for that role,” Scholes said when asked who Man United’s best midfielder is.

“I would definitely go for him, I think he has everything. He is athletic, he has great ability and he can also get around the track, he is able to sit in that position.

“Ole does not seem to be able to get the balance right in the team.

“Will he play one midfielder with the rest around him, have (Paul) Pogba next to him, whom he probably does not trust defensively, or will he play two holding midfielders.

“It’s the difference between United and, I think, Liverpool and City. They are much more aggressive and aggressive.

“City go to Chelsea and play a midfield game with almost six or seven strikers, that is the difference in mentality.

“If Ole can get it right, with that balance in the team. Going forward is not a problem, we have so many good, exciting players with Cristiano (Ronaldo) on the way.

“Defensively we look good, everything is there. It seems to be getting one person in the middle of the field to balance in the team.

“When he gets it right, I think we need to be okay.”
