Thompson Beach shipping container house hits the market for $ 300,000

Unused shipping containers have been fused together to create a surprisingly stylish home – but you would never believe it until you walked in the door.

Built on a site in Thompson Beach, 74 kilometers north of Adelaide, SA, the two-bedroom house may look like a prefabricated building office from the outside – but it has just entered the market for offers over $ 300,000.

The house on a 979sqm block is made of two professionally modified containers and is equipped with sleek, modern furniture and a large entertainment deck.

LJ Hooker CEO Michael Fenn, who oversees sales of real estate agent Ryan Graham, said that while shipping containers tailored to city life are not unusual, this one is ‘unique’.

‘It’s a real rarity,’ he told the Daily Mail Australia.

‘People build homes like this for themselves, but you almost never see them for sale.’

Fenn said the design of the Thompson Beach container is ‘conceptually smart’, with the front area occupied by the living room and kitchen and the rear part taken up on the bathroom and bedrooms.

The bedrooms are not finished yet, but he said there is not much work left.

Although Fenn ‘has no idea’ about construction costs, he said the shipping container model is a ‘cheap and solid way’ to build a home.

‘You’re working on a square box connected to a common deck area, which is a huge potential,’ he added.

Outside the main building, the property also has a shed with a garage, a workshop or games room and four parking spaces as well as a room with a bathroom that can be used as a guest bedroom or a retreat for teenagers.

Fenn said he expects interest from Adelaide residents who want to cut down or escape the city when the house goes under the hammer on Oct. 31.

Prefabricated homes are becoming increasingly popular in Australia and abroad as the demand for fast and affordable construction continues to rise.

Homeowners are rolling from long delays and record highs as Australia endures its worst shortage of building supplies for more than 40 years.

The impact of the pandemic on international supply chains has made the import of materials slow and expensive.

The prefabricated construction market is expected to sponge over the next four years, creating 20,000 jobs and adding $ 30 billion to the national economy by 2025, industry analysts Mordor Intelligence reported.

Just over 10 per cent of Australian homes will be prefabricated by 2030, current forecasts show.
