Xavier Pabon, 30, and Samer Jayylusi, 36, were each charged with two counts of aggravated assault for assault that was likely to cause grievous bodily harm, the district attorney’s office said in a news release.

They are accused of attacking two men outside the restaurant because of their religion, according to the statement.

“The criminal complaint also contains an allegation of hate crime,” the statement said.

On May 18, Pabon and Jayylusi were allegedly part of a caravan driving past a sushi restaurant where the altercation with diners later took place, the statement said.

The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating restaurant quarrels as a possible anti-Semitic hate crime

CNN is trying to identify lawyers for Pabon and Jayylusi.

Witnesses said Jewish people eating in the restaurant were targeted by a group of pro-Palestinian men driving past in vehicles.

Video obtained by CNN showed a number of cars driving past the restaurant that seemed to match the description from the police with passengers waving Palestinian flags and exchanging anti-Israel slogans and swear words with people outside the restaurant.

A woman who said she ate at the restaurant told CNN that the people in the cars started throwing bottles at them and shouting anti-Semitic nonsense, including the words “dirty Jew”.

Some of the pro-Palestinian men got out of their vehicles and started attacking people, witnesses said.

The altercation came amid violence between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza.

“We saw from the window how the guys sitting at the table next to us were beaten while they (the attackers) asked ‘who is Jewish’ and shouted ‘dirty Jew’ and ‘Israel kills children’ and ‘dead to Israel ‘, “said the woman.

“A hate crime is a crime against all of us,” Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gasc√≥n said in a statement. “My office is committed to doing everything we can to make Los Angeles County a place where our diversity is embraced and protected.”

Jayylusi is expected to be charged Tuesday. Pabon’s indictment is scheduled for Thursday, prosecutors said.

The case is still under investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department.
