Here at HerCanberra we get a lot of unique media releases. But one we received last week spoke to us on a personal level. Of course it was about karaoke.

The British power provider USwitch (like their ActewAGL?) Wanted to tell us that by smashing worldwide data on karaoke, they would encounter the fact that Canberra was the “world karaoke capital” with 7.57 karaoke bars per day. 35 in total in the city. They even had flash graphics to prove it.

Of course, there are some capitals that beat over their weight, such as Tokyo with 104 (perhaps not surprisingly for the birthplace of karaoke) and London’s 68 karaoke venues.

But there are also some that seem very flawed in the area of belt-out-Livin’-On-A-Prayer-so-hard-you-almost-black-out. Poor Copenhagen has only 12! The horror!

At HerCanberra, we are deeply concerned about this issue, our team’s mutual worship of karaoke discovered through a 88 MPH Christmas party reservation a few years ago.

We sang, we laughed, we cried, our boss Amanda rapped Ice Ice Baby to perfection. It was a crucial moment for all of us.

But for those who have not experienced the sweet sound of your colleagues or friends singing a slightly off-key power duet to Don’t Stop Believin ‘, we will share the magic.

While we could not find all 35 karaoke venues that USwitch seemed to believe existed in Canberra, here is a small selection of our favorite karaoke venues.

80s karaoke heaven. Two dedicated karaoke rooms and an 80s-themed nightclub complete with a bright dance floor.

88 mph. Bar

Karaoke at Bootleg

For those who loved the old Karaoke Tuesdays at the Transit Bar – they’re back! You can now enjoy Karaoke Thursdays at Bootleg in Garema Place.

Soundbox karaoke and bar

Massive venues and even greater song choices in Dickson. Dinner on Woolley Street + Soundbox = heaven.

K-Bar Karaoke

Belco’s response to karaoke craze. Large rooms and great looking microphones that seem to autotune you to perfection. We love to see it.

Hi Show Karaoke

We have not personally visited the Hey Show (yet!), But their theme room and central location look like a winner to us.
