England have appointed a 17-man ash team for the upcoming series against Australia.

The announcement of the squad comes after the England and Wales Cricket Board earlier this week confirmed their commitment to the series from December.

The Ashes series was in doubt after both the ECB and its players expressed concern over the restrictive health and travel protocols in Australia.

The big committee question fans were waiting for was the availability of all-rounder Ben Stokes, who recently underwent another operation on his finger while also taking time off due to mental health.

He was not named in the squad.

Fast bowlers Jofra Archer and Olly Stone were previously ruled out of contention due to injuries.

Meanwhile, all-rounder Sam Curran was also not considered due to a lumbar injury.

“I’m glad all of our available players are committed to the trip. That’s why we play and coach to participate in iconic series like this,” said head coach and pick Chris Silverwood.

“More than half of our squad has not been on an Ashes tour before, which means we will be fresh and looking to embrace cricket and the excitement of touring one of the best places in the world.

“I think we have chosen a well-balanced squad with opportunities in all areas and a mix of youth and experience. There is real competition for places and a real desire to work hard and compete with the aim of creating some history.

“We have no illusions about how difficult the task is going to be. Australia have been strong at home in the past and there is an expectation that they will win this series.

“But from our point of view, there is real excitement and belief that we can do something special.”
