Georgia Stanway reveals she has been ‘exposed to all kinds of insulting messages’ after red card challenge in WSL Manchester derby as City star apologizes and insists ‘there was absolutely no malicious intent’

Manchester City boss Georgia Stanway apologized for broadcasting in the Women’s Super League’s Manchester derby on Saturday, but revealed she had been exposed to ‘offensive messages’ on social media after the incident.

The 22-year-old was shown just red for an ugly challenge on Leah Galton 35 minutes inside the competition.

When Galton controlled the ball with his left foot and appeared to leap past Stanway, the English national team completely misunderstood her challenge and planted its studs on the United player’s thigh.

Judge Rebecca Welch had no choice but to give PFA Women’s Young Player of the Year 2019 her marching orders.

Sunday morning, Stanway apologized for the dispatch, but insisted that her red card did not justify the kind of ‘offensive messages’ she received on social media.

‘I would like to apologize for the broadcast in yesterday’s Manchester Derby,’ she wrote in a note posted on his Twitter account.

‘Everyone who knows me knows that I’m passionate and competitive. There was absolutely no malice intent and I’m glad Leah was ok and able to continue the game.

‘A huge thank you to my Man City teammates for the support and effort to secure a point. And to both sets of fans to create an incredible atmosphere.

‘I made a mistake and hope that everyone can accept my apology, but I should not have to log on to social media and find myself exposed to all kinds of offensive messages – remember, we are all human and mistakes can happen. ‘

Despite Stanway’s red card, City took the lead through Khadija Shaw’s header shortly before half time.

United struck back in the second half as substitute Lucy Staniforth equalized 72 minutes later before Alessia Russo made it 2-1 just three minutes later.

City eventually snatched a draw thanks to Ellen White’s goal, but remain ninth in the table, eight points behind league leaders Arsenal.
