Jessica Haring listened to the BreastScreen message to get a mammogram when you reach 50.

Jessica was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 51 six years ago. Her diagnosis was Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). DCIS is a non-invasive breast cancer that starts inside the milk ducts, carcinoma refers to any cancer that begins in the skin or other tissues (including breast tissue) that covers or covers the internal organs and in situ means “in its original place. ”

Jessica said, “It was found during my first mammogram ever, and I thought I’d better go because I’m 50 now.”

“There was no lump, no pain, but I listened to the message. I went to a private clinic on the Sunshine Coast where they did a mammogram and ultrasound and the sonographer seemed to be concerned about a particular area.

I said, do you see anything, is there an anomaly? He reassured me and said he just thinks it’s a good idea to do a biopsy. I found that I was getting really emotional. This is really happening. ”

“He did the biopsy and I had to wait a week for the results. He called and said there was something there and referred me to a specialist at a private hospital. ”

“She explained the DCIS diagnosis and explained that they had caught it very early and it had not left the channel or it would have been a different story.”

“They had to perform the operation under anesthesia three times to make sure they had it all, and then I had three months of radiation on Nambour. I had it five days a week and drove down every day from Cooloola Cove for treatment. I now have annual ultrasounds ”

“It was a really busy time in my life and I didn’t really have time to get the first mammogram, but because of ‘Over 50 messages’ I went.”

“I had no breast cancer in the family and I still think the cancer was due to my stressful lifestyle.”

Jessica said our health should be about ‘prevention is better than cure’ and is grateful that she listened to messages from Breast Cancer and Cancer Council, which are part of what the money raised is used for.
