LA police officer and firefighter fall ill after being in contact with patient during call

An LAPD officer and a firefighter in LA are recovering Monday morning after they suddenly became ill when they came in contact with a patient outside a Walgreens downtown.

It happened in the store on 7th Street around 4:20 p.m. Sunday, according to authorities.

The two agencies responded to a call about a fight in the store. The officer and firefighter had blurred vision and tingling hands.

According to an update released Monday morning, the LAPD says it is unclear what substance was detected at the site, but tests for fentanyl came back negative.

The fire department reported the presence of cocaine.

The officer and firefighter received decontamination showers and were eventually released from the hospital.

They are expected to recover completely.
