All the generous work from the Lions Club of Queanbeyan Community Bookshop volunteers has paid off. Announced as the Volunteer of the Year at this year’s NSW Volunteer of the Year 2021 Thursday, October 7, staffed with volunteers from the Lions Club and the local community, the bookstore has raised more than $ 80,000 for local charities such as St Benedict’s Community Center, Louisa Women’s Refuge and Barnardos and Meals on Wheels. ALSO READ: Hearing date set for Goulburn woman accused of producing child pornography Since the store opened in 2018, the bookstore has been a central hub for the Queanbeyan community, a place to chat, browse and pick up good books. It has also provided opportunities for work experience for students at Karabar High School. A major partner for awards ClubsNSW CEO Josh Landis said volunteers always play an integrated role for clubs and the community, especially during the pandemic. ALSO READ: Check out the development applications currently on public display “After the challenges we have all endured over the past 18 months, the efforts and sacrifices of our state volunteers feel more significant than ever,” Landis said. “In NSW, we have 32,000 volunteers helping to make clubs such amazing places.” Without them, clubs would not be able to accomplish all the wonderful things they do for their communities. The awards are run by The Center for Volunteering to recognize the outstanding efforts volunteers are making across all sections of society across the state.
