Spotify makes it easier to grab its first hardware device, Car Thing, by opening a waiting list to purchase the device that anyone can join from today. The catch is that now the streaming service’s previously only invitation product is $ 79.99, as it used to be free with paid shipping and handling.

Even though Spotify lets anyone with an account sign up for their waiting list, whether it’s free or premium, you still need a premium account to actually use the device. At the new price of $ 79.99, it’s also worth re-examining what Car Thing can do.

Car Thing comes with a selection of brackets for your car.

The Car Thing is not a standalone Spotify device. It connects to your phone via Bluetooth and uses a phone’s Internet connection to stream and control the playback of songs and podcasts from Spotify’s library. Car Thing is also completely dependent on the phone’s Bluetooth, USB or auxiliary cable connection to your car, which basically makes the device a glorified Spotify remote.

In our hands-on with Car Thing, the included voice controls (“Hey Spotify) were useful, but it may not matter if your built-in stereo does the same. Car Thing is just limited – even if Spotify plans to update it – and it is not longer “for free.” I would really recommend considering whether it is worth it before signing up to buy one.

You can sign up for Spotify’s waiting list for Car Thing on the company’s website.
