ABC understands that the Tasmanian government is meeting with public health to discuss further COVID measures, including a brief, sharp three-day lockdown in the south.
The government will hold a COVID press conference at 14:30 AEDT.
It comes after a 31-year-old man flew into Hobart from Melbourne on Monday without the appropriate border card.
He was driven to a quarantine hotel in Hobart’s CBD, but security guards discovered he was missing from his room Tuesday afternoon.
Police found him in a home in Bridgewater at 6 p.m. 16.45 the same day and has since been transferred to the Fountainside medi hotel in Hobarts CBD.
He was tested for coronavirus and returned a positive test.
It is not yet known how the man left the hotel quarantine and there is no CCTV showing how or where the man left the Travelodge.
Footage obtained by ABC appeared to show the man outside the Travelodge at 10.50pm on Monday, less than an hour after he was put in hotel quarantine.
Prime Minister Peter Gutwein said yesterday that the man was “uncooperative” and has refused to wear a face mask since testing positive COVID.
Yesterday, public health confirmed that the man had visited a Woolworths in Bridgewater between 3:30 pm and 4:00 pm, prompting hundreds of people to show up for testing at a new transit clinic in Gagebrook today.
The pop-up clinic in Cris Fitzpatrick Park in Gagebrook opened at 8:30 and works until 15:30.
A walk-in vaccination clinic is also available at the nearby Brighton Civic Center.
Four exposure sites have so far been built by public health:
- Jetstar flight JQ715 Melbourne to Hobart arrives at 20:27 on 11 October;
- Hobart airport arrival area male bathroom between 21:10 and 21:15 and 21:25 and 21:30, 11 October;
- Hobart Airport Arrivals Hall including luggage collection between 20:54 and 22:07, 11 October.
- Woolworths Bridgewater between 15:30 and 16:00, October 12
On Wednesday, police said the 31-year-old man would likely be fined about $ 3,000 for violating state border requirements and leaving hotel quarantine.
