Party goers at a popular Corydon Avenue bar were unharmed but shaken after a shooter shot into the business early Saturday morning.
Witnesses told Global News that a man was escorted out of Bar Italia by security personnel shortly after midnight and repeatedly tried to re-enter.
As the bouncing men held their footing, witnesses then reported seeing the man on his phone.
Moments later, about a dozen shots rang out in the busy nightclub, smashing a windshield.
“It was so loud in there,” witness Shawn Eisler told 680 CJOB. “Then everyone hit the tire and tried to find some cover.”
“I had no idea what was going on until I saw (my friend) running towards me with pure panic in his face.”
“(The friend) told us they were shooting in our direction.”
Co-owner Carson Ransom was standing next to Eisler when the attack took place.
Man shot early in the morning Poplar Avenue argument, Winnipeg police continue to investigate
“I was at the bar getting drinks, and suddenly (our friend) came up to us and said there was a shot,” he explained.
“We went to the VLT area and hid for a moment,” Ransom recalled. “Everyone was hiding behind tables and I was looking around the corner and there was light.”
Ransom says more than a dozen police officers in Winnipeg were at the scene just a few minutes after the shooting.
By that time, the alleged assailant had made his way inside the bar.
“(Officers) fought him to the ground and handcuffed him.”
Eisler said the prompt response from officers helped reassure the shocked crowd.
“They kept us there for probably 45 minutes and removed everyone’s information before letting us go.”
Police have not yet answered nearly a dozen calls from Global News and asked for confirmation of the arrest.
