The campaign, funded by philanthropists and companies, aims to increase national vaccination rates above 80 percent, an important reopening target under the national plan.

But Craig Winkler of the Million Dollar Vax Alliance says it’s not designed to convince Australians who are hesitant to get vaccinated.

“It’s a decision you should make in consultation with a healthcare professional,” he said in a statement earlier in October.

“The campaign simply seeks to reward people who decide to be vaccinated now instead of waiting so we can reduce the societal impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The sooner we reach higher vaccination rates at the national level, higher than 80 percent, the sooner we can all safely resume our full range of community and business activities.”

Australia’s vaccination rates have risen in recent months as supply problems eased.

The federal government had considered incentives to encourage Australians to get the plug before the lockdown-inducing outbreak of the highly contagious Delta variant in NSW and Victoria.

Victorian Prime Minister Daniel Andrews has approved the concept after his state announced a mandate for more than a million authorized workers.

“It’s good. I’m not excited about what motivates you, whether it’s for your health or to help the people you love, to protect our health care system and our nurses, or to win $ 1 million,” he said. he journalists earlier in October.

“Just go and get vaccinated. That’s what I’m asking about because it’s our way out of this.

The initiative is inspired by the Ohio ‘Vax-A-Million’ campaign in the United States.

Philanthropy Australia CEO Jack Heath hopes it will “save lives, ease the burden on healthcare professionals and benefit the wider community”.

All Australian adults are eligible to enter the competition online as long as they have received a first dose on or before 31 October.

Prizes will only be awarded to those who are fully vaccinated by December 13, six weeks after the cut-off date.
