Former Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard remains in custody in Toronto on charges of sexually assaulting six women with a bail hearing scheduled for next month, a court said Friday morning.
Nygard, 80, was flown from Winnipeg to Toronto on Thursday and met a virtual court appearance from a downtown police station Friday. He was ordered not to have contact with the six women who have accused him of sexual assault and imprisonment between October 1987 and March 2006. In October, Toronto police issued an arrest warrant for Nygard on six counts of sexual assault and three counts of imprisonment. . 1.
Nygard is also facing charges in New York of sexually assaulting seven women. He agreed to be extradited to the United States earlier this month and has been in custody in a Winnipeg prison since his arrest on these charges in December 2020.
It is still unclear whether Nygard will stay in Canada to address his Toronto charges before being extradited, or whether he will first face a lawsuit in the United States.
Nygard’s lawyer Brian Greenspan has maintained that his client denies any allegations of criminal conduct.
A bail hearing has been set for November 12. A routinely used restraining order has been placed on the evidence and arguments presented during the bail hearing, with the aim of protecting a defendant’s fair trial.
