Cal Cruises Past Cal State LA, 92-58

BERKELEY – When he played in front of fans for the first time since February 2020, Cal drove to a 92-58 victory over Cal State Los Angeles in the Golden Bears’ only show match of the 2021-22 season on Monday in the Haas Pavilion.

Senior Grant Anticevich scored 19 of his high 23 points in the first half. With senior Andre Kelly added 17 points while Joel Brown had seven assists and Lars Thiemann added 10 points.

As a team, Cal shot 62.1 percent from the floor and made eight 3-pointers, led by three each from Anticevich and Article foreman. The Bears also had 25 assists and forced 27 turnovers.

Anticevich shot 10-for-12 from the field, and had this been a regular game, the 23 points would have tied career-high. Kelly was also an 8-to-10 shooter.

Among the newcomers, graduate transfer Jordan Shepherd had 11 points, with Sam Alajiki contributes five points and five rebounds.

Andrease Jackson followed Cal State LA with 13 points.


After Cal State LA took a quick 5-2 lead, the Bears got hot and continued with a 16-2 run with eight points from Anticevich. The lead reached a full 23 points at 47-24 before Cal went into the locker room with a break of 49-29.

Out of the break, the Bears sank nine of their first 13 shots to open a 70-40 lead with 13:22 left, and Cal State LA did not reach within 27 the rest of the way.

The Bears officially open the regular season 2021-22 on Tuesday, November 9, when they host UC San Diego at. 14.00 in Haas Pavilion. The game will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks as part of the Tip-Off on Tuesday and will be available for free to all fans through the Pac-12 Now app.
