LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – It was not a bird, it was not a plane, and it was not a man in a jetpack.

Pictures taken by a LAPD helicopter crew of a so-called “jet pack man” observation were released this week. But the figure was actually not a man, but a Jack Skellington balloon flying high over the city.
Jack Skellington is a skeleton character from the animated film “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. The balloon in video recorded by the LAPD helicopter crew clearly shows the balloon’s skeleton face along with the black suit and bow.
This particular observation happened in early November last year, in the wake of other observations reported by jetliner pilots.

The FBI has worked with the FAA to investigate such jetpack sightings in the Los Angeles area, saying none of them have yet been verified.
“One working theory is that pilots may have seen balloons,” the FBI said in a statement.
In August last year, pilots reported seeing a person fly in a jetpack just west of the 710 Freeway in the Cudahy and South Gate areas. A few months later, a China Airlines crew reportedly saw “what appeared to be someone in a jetpack” at an altitude of about 6,000 feet about seven miles west of LAX.

In another observation of a possible jetpack 15 miles east of LAX at 5,000 feet, a pilot joked that they were looking for Marvel superhero Iron Man.
