In a message sent to parents, the Academy said the school had entered a “partial closure” when police attended the scene.
GMP says they have since determined there were no firearms in the area, and believe the call was a hoax.
An investigation has been launched to locate the caller, police said.
The force confirmed that officers would patrol the area for reassurance and has advised everyone concerned to speak to them.
A GMP spokesman said: “Around 9.10am this morning, police received a report of what is now believed to be a hoax caller claiming there is a man with a firearm outside a school on Moor Road.
“The officers attended and it was found that there was no man with a firearm present in the area.
“Queries are ongoing.”
