Not surprisingly, BC’s largest population centers dominated an annual ranking of the province’s most “worn” cities.
And for the fifth year in a row, Vancouver Orkin topped Canada’s annual top-20 list, followed by Burnaby in second place and Victoria in third place.
“More shutdowns over the past year have meant more people cooking and eating at home,” Orkin Canada said in a press release.
“A recent study showed that Canadians produced 13.5 percent more food waste during lockdown than non-lockdown times. Food abundance means potential increases in rodent populations, which is why people can see more rats and mice in residential areas.”

Orkin Canada also said that experts have observed bolder behavior among rodents
“Mainly nocturnal, increased observations of rodent activity during the day have become more common, as well as migrations from resource-depleted urban centers to food-rich suburbs, where rats and mice may have been able to reproduce and drive up the population. ”

Why Vancouver is BC’s most troubled city
According to Orkin Canada, Vernon moved into the top 10 after an 11th place finish last year, while North Vancouver dropped out of the top 10 and dropped to 13th.th from 8.
Orkin also noted that Terrace, who finished 20th last year, and Sidney (16th) were not on this year’s list.
Orkin Canada also says that as cooler weather approaches, rodents can seek shelter.
But there are tactics that can be used to reduce rodents from entering your homes and frequenting your property:
- Seal cracks or holes in your foundation and install weather strips around windows and doors
- Keep shrubs at least one meter away from the outer walls of your home
- Get rid of moisture sources, such as clogged gutters
- Be careful to keep trash and old food away from your house
The rankings are based on the number of treatments for commercial and residential rodents (rats and mice) performed by Orkin Canada from August 1, 2020 to July 31, 2021.
