Canberra Raiders sign Jeremy Hickmans as head of performance

Canberra’s most significant signing for 2022 may well be the man who helped Ariarne Titmus to Olympic glory in Tokyo.

Raider’s new Head of Performance Jeremy Hickmans has one of the most impressive CVs in Australian sport.

Hickmans helped the Broncos (2005) and Dragons (2010) win premieres with Wayne Bennett and also worked in the national netball league, in the AFL for women – and with Swimming Australia at the Olympics.

“I’ve been moving around the last couple of years but have always loved the rugby league,” Hickmans told the Wide World of Sports.

“I worked with (Raiders’ head of recruitment) Peter Mulholland in Newcastle and it all came up when we had a talk recently.

“I started earlier in the week and can’t wait for the players to get back to training soon and get to work on them.”

Hickmans has a big job with the Raiders in 2022 after the club’s massive drop from grace last season.

Canberra were one of the big disappointments of 2021, and their fadeouts in the second half were a recurring nightmare for coach Ricky Stuart and the Raiders’ faithful.

But Hickmans is not someone who points fingers or looks to hand out the blame.

“They are professional athletes and as such everyone is disappointed with what happened last season,” he said.

“It’s a common trait when a club is successful for a long time and then has a bad year.

“The only message I got was that a change is needed, and that’s what I hope to give.

“The atmosphere I get in the pitch from the staff is very positive and when one has had a bad year, it can often be motivation to do better next season.”
