Liverpool Jurgen Klopp on Josh Cavallo coming out of the decision, A-League Adelaide United player

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised Adelaide United’s Josh Cavallo for his bravery in coming out, but says he hopes there may come a day when a similar announcement will not be seen as “necessary”.

Since Cavallo came out last week, the biggest names in football have come out in support of the 21-year-old.

Football superstars including Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Marcus Rashford, Sam Kerr, Antoine Griezmann and Gerard Pique were among many who praised Cavallo for his bravery.

During a recent press conference, Klopp said it was a “problem” that society is still putting pressure on gay athletes to comment on their privacy.

“I think we all agree that it should not be like that,” Klopp said.

“It’s clear that Josh’s doing it, and it’s such a big story, that’s the problem we have … that it’s not normal, or that he should speak out, and that he’s not just living his private life, and no one should be bothered by it.

“From what I can tell you with 30 years in the industry, I’ve never had a locker room where that would have been a problem at all.”

The Liverpool manager said the sport and its players are not particularly the issue, rather the perception that is unfolding in society.

“The problem is not the inner circle, the problem is the wider thing. We all have to work on it,” he added.

“It is very disappointing that we still have to work on it, but we have to work on it, that’s how it is.

“That kind of news is not necessary, no one should come up with such an announcement … I did not have to say I’m straight. That kind of thing should just be completely normal.

“I saw his speech or message and he looks like a really strong, smart young man and I really wish him all the best.

“I’m really grateful he did, because now we’re talking again, and I’m not sure when we last talked about this topic, and now we’re talking again, and it’s always a good start for change.”
