When Antonio Conte’s ‘Anti-Football’ Against Manchester City tactic was blown up

Antonio Conte has officially put the pen to paper to become Tottenham Hotspur’s new manager, having agreed on the terms of an initial 18-month deal.

It will be his second round in the Premier League after spectacularly winning the title with Chelsea back in 2017. Despite the success, however, Conte did not escape criticism in his time as the club’s manager.

The season after his all-time winning team paved the way for glory, the 52-year-old was embroiled in controversy over the way Chelsea performed against Manchester City at Ethiad.

As the clip below highlights, The Blues parked the bus efficiently from the start and refused to be pulled out of their stiff, defensive form.

Conte’s tactical plan that day provoked an angry response from some Sky Sports experts after the match, with Jamie Redknapp calls it “anti-football” – after the visitors lost 1-0.

“It was a crime against football what they had [Chelsea] did today … it was as if they did not want to move forward at all, “added the former Liverpool midfielder.

“I really feel a lot about it. I was looking forward to watching this match today.”

Redknapp’s colleague Gary Neville added: “This is sad from Chelsea. It really is. In terms of a Premier League match, it is unacceptable.

“It has nothing to do with the solidity or form of the team they play, it’s just the intention.

“Look at them. When I sit in this seat, you always think, ‘Am I calling it wrong, or am I being too harsh?’

“There’s no part of me that can see this and think it’s right. It’s just not right.”

Conte was quick to shoot back at the criticism, claiming it would have been pointless to have attacked City as it may have resulted in his team being on the wrong end of a hammering.

“I think one has to accept any criticism, but I’m not so stupid to play against Man City openly and lose 3-0 or 4-0,” the former Inter boss was quoted as saying. The sun.

How Conte will set up his Spurs side in the coming weeks is still unknown, but it would certainly not come as a shock if he tries to do something similar in away games – at least until he is able to recruit players in January .
