Will Pucovski, Ashes, Australia squad, team against England, concussion

Victoria Coach Chris Rogers has almost confirmed that young gunman Will Pucovski will be unavailable for the inaugural Ashes Test.

The 23-year-old right-handed opener suffered a concussion during a training session last month and the symptoms persist.

Pucovski has struggled with ongoing concussion problems for years, and Victoria has ruled him out of this week’s Sheffield Shield match.

Rogers told the media that it is unlikely that Pucovski will be available for selection for the Ashes opening at Gabba from December 8.

“He has not quite recovered as well as the hope of this battle from the concussion,” Rogers said.

“In discussions with the medical team and the national selectors, it felt like we would give him a little more time before he is selected to play for Australia.

“All the people in these conversations understand that we have a huge talent on hand and we want him to play in three to five to 10 years. These are the decisions we will make in his best interest and hopefully we will can set him up to play in a long career.

“There is no doubt that it is a setback – I would say that it is now unlikely that he will play in the first Test. If we play a third Shield match in mid-November and there may be is also another XI match for Victoria, can prepare him for one of the matches in the middle of the Ashes series.

“That’s the best case scenario at the moment.”

Pucovski made his Test debut last summer before a shoulder injury forced him out of the team.

He was expected to be named as David Warner’s opening partner for Ashes, but his latest concussion leaves a void at the top of the order.

Usman Khawaja has put himself back in the selection frame with consecutive centuries for Queensland, while Marcus Harris is the second opener to be mentioned as a potential Warner partner.
