Tottenham are focusing on an expulsion from Manchester United in January

Spurs are looking for defensive reinforcements

Antonio Conte’s arrival brings a change to a back three, which the Italian has used in all his other jobs and which Chelsea fans will no doubt be very familiar with.

For Tottenham, it brings problems with it. Although Sergio Reguilon and Emerson Royal are both well-equipped to play as wing-backs and there is plenty of coverage in midfield, central defense is a serious problem.

As it stands, only Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon, Eric Dier and Cristian Romero can be considered senior center-back options, though Japhet Tanganga is also a promising alternative who has impressed at right-back and center-back.

Although Romero has been impressive so far, he has suffered a setback in a rock-solid start to his Spurs career, which has seen him already work under two different managers. Speaking ahead of Lilywhite’s draw with Mura, Conte also did not sound too hopeful about his recovery time, saying:

“About Cristian Romero, we are waiting for another scan. Honestly, I think his injury is serious.

“We have to wait. I do not know now when he will recover. His injury is probably more serious than Giovani Lo Celso or Danish Scarlett.

“We have to wait for the next scan and then the doctor can provide more information about the dates of his cure,” he added.

So now down to three center-backs for the three pitches, it is clear that reinforcements are needed.

Spurs are aiming for Manchester United’s outcast

Step forward, Eric Bailly.

According to Duncan Castles, and passed on via Manchester Evening news, Manchester United and Ivory Coast’s central defense are “an option” for Spurs as Conte are looking for two new central defenders in the January transfer window.

Bailly finds himself as the fourth choice in Manchester, and behind the formidable (on paper) partnership between Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane, meaning he could be open to such a move. Whether Manchester United would be willing to sanction it, however, is another matter in which Varane’s injury concerns so far this season have raised concerns.

Would this move be one that would help the Spurs return to European football?
