The season finale of At Home and Away has just been aired in Australia (Thursday, November 25), ending another dramatic year with the show.

The last episode of the year saw Ari (Rob Kipa-Williams) free to Mia (Anna Samson), Chloe (Sam Barrett) killed his father just a few weeks after meeting him, Ryder (Lukas Radovich) faces an uncertain future after being been buried alive, and Martha (Belinda Giblin) decides she would not accept a transplant from Roo (Georgie Parker).

At Home and Away is now off the air in both Australia and the UK, returning in early 2022. Until then, here’s a summary of the dramatic events of the season’s final week, which airs in the UK at the end of February.

Chloe kills her father

Mia and Chloe in happier times, before Matthew arrived

It was hailed as “the murder that no one saw coming”, and since Chloe and Matthew played happy families only a handful of episodes before the season finale, that was largely the case.

British viewers have not even met the new character Matthew (James Sweeny) yet, but he is ready to change the lives of Mia (Anna Samspon), Chloe and Ari (Rob Kipa-Williams) when he arrives on British screens early in the new years.

Matthew arrived at the bay after discovering he had a daughter

He’s Chloe’s absent father, and he arrives in Summer Bay after reading a newspaper article about Mia buying the gym. He quickly gets connected to the daughter he never knew he had, to Mia and Ari’s great regret.

In the last week of episodes, Chloe decided to accept his offer to pay for her tuition at a prestigious business school in the city. In addition, she decided to move in with him as he lives only a few blocks away from the college. Ari and Mia insisted there was no way they would let it happen, but Chloe was just as convinced she was going.

Chloe could not understand why her mother and stepfather were so against Matthew, a man who had been nothing but kind and generous to her since he arrived. The truth is, Chloe was conceived as a result of Matthew sexually assaulting Mia after a party, and his unexpected arrival in Summer Bay has become Mia’s worst nightmare.

Eventually, as Chloe began preparing to leave, Mia finally gave in and told her daughter about the night she was conceived.

When she did, everything changed. Chloe ran out to the bathroom to be sick, unable to believe what she was hearing. Suddenly she wanted nothing more to do with the man, felt stupid for falling for his generosity and was struck by guilt for having exposed Mia through weeks of pain.

In Thursday’s triple-bill finale, she began ignoring his calls and trying to cut him out of her life. However, after finally having the opportunity to get in touch with his daughter, Matthew was not ready to say goodbye.

He showed up back in Summer Bay in the final episode, and a certain streak showed up when he demanded Chloe with him.

“Are you ever giving up?” asked Chloe, now disgusted at the sight of him.

“Not when it comes to something as important as my daughter,” he replied, and the word “daughter” now sent a nasty shiver through Chloe’s spine. It took Alf’s intervention for him to leave Chloe alone, but that was not the end of things.

He later appeared in the Parata house and became aggressive as she continued to refuse to come with him. He grabbed her, and later he fought with Mia as she tried to protect her daughter.

In some awful second, Chloe grabbed a way to protect her mother on a rock and smashed it over Matthew’s head, killing him in an instant.

Mia and Chloe then stuffed the body into the back of Matthews Mercedes. Mia left Chloe behind and drove off, planning to throw the body in the bush.

Unfortunately, Cash happened to be out on patrol, and decided to flag her car down shortly after she left Summer Bay. When she realized that her top was covered in blood, she knew she could not let Cash see her, so the gas hit and hurried away.

How will Chloe and the rest of Paratas fare in the wake of Matthew’s death? Will anyone end up behind bars? There is a lot more drama in store after the Christmas holidays.

Felicity is struggling with his father’s death

Elsewhere, Felicity Newman (Jacqui Purvis) fought on the day of his father’s memorial.

Cash (Nicholas Cartwright) was on his way to the memorial to join their father’s friends to pay tribute to him, but Felicity refused to go, as she does every year.

After being drunk and arguing with Jasmine (Sam Frost), Flick ended up fainting at the Parata Basin until Ari (Rob Kipa-Williams) found her and brought her inside for the extra bedroom.

The next morning, hangover and confused as to why she was lying in a stranger’s bed, she finally opened up to Tane (Ethan Browne), sharing her precious photo album with him and broke down in tears as she showed him a picture of her father.

She was completely shocked in the final episodes when Cash (Nicholas Cartwright) returned from the memorial with an unexpected surprise.

Cash has always known that their father killed himself, after struggling to survive when their mother died and their farming business collapsed, but Felicity has always insisted that someone must have murdered him, in the belief that he would never have left them.

However, Cash returned from the memorial with the police case of their father’s death, including the autopsy report. It contained the gruesome details and images that prove once and for all that their father actually ended his own life.

It was a hard read, but it was enough to make Felicity finally admit that her father was not murdered. But now she nurtures lots of anger at their father for having left them, and there is much more work to be done in her recovery.

She and Tane set off on a road trip in the final episode, en route to a remote log cabin as a way to help her come to terms with the revelation.

Will the time away with her new boyfriend help Felicity get shut down, or is there much more drama in store between the Newman siblings in 2022?

The proposal

When Mia finally told Chloe the truth about Matthew, it seemed like things could finally look up. Chloe apologized for the way she had treated her mother and Ari, and the trio started playing happy families again.

In an emotional scene in the Parata Garden, the whole family gathered for a sumptuous meal before Ari fell to his knees to ask the question.

“Getting a second chance with you is more than I ever thought I ever deserved. So I ask, will you marry me?”

“Here’s to your happy to the end of their days,” Chloe roared in a toast to her mother and soon-to-be official stepfather.

But their happiness lasted short when Matthew reappeared and Paratas ended the 2021 season with a very uncertain future. Will Mia and Ari go down the aisle together in 2022?

Ryder was trapped underground

Ryder and the new Theo (Matt Evans) have spent the last few months thinking stunt after stunt to impress followers on their growing YouTube channel (or Summer Bay’s equivalent video sharing platform). They quickly went viral, and ad revenue quickly began to roll in.

But their business venture lasted short, and the two went their separate ways when Ryder discovered that Theo had kissed Chloe during one of their previous challenges.

Ryder initially wanted nothing more to do with Theo, but he eventually agreed to continue with the videos as it was his only way to pay La Cucaracha’s debts to his friends and family.

Their next set of challenges was pretty tame, and in the penultimate week, Theo and Ziggy competed in a timed blindfolded wheel change at Summer Bay Auto. It got some views in, but it was hardly the big stunt that they should go viral again.

Finally, Theo came up with a great idea to make the prospect flow in – they wanted to bury Ryder in a wooden coffin out in the remote bushland and live-stream his reaction to their thousands of followers. If he managed five hours underground, he would win the challenge.

In the last dramatic episode, the stunt began.

But things took a disastrous turn when Theo, who was safe above the ground and keeping a watchful eye on things, stumbled over a tree root and fell to the ground while banging his head and knocking himself out in the process.

Ryder realized something was wrong as he could not get in touch with his stunt buddy, and as the clock kept ticking, he began to panic.

“If this is a joke, it’s not funny. Answer me!” begged Ryder in a desperate answering machine.

The camera turned out to show the newly covered ground hiding Ryder buried below, with Theo unconscious just a few feet away.

Since none of their Summer Bay friends and relatives have any idea that the stunt is taking place at all, there is someone who will find them when At Home and Away will return in 2022?

Roo struggled with the transplant decision

Martha’s (Belinda Giblin) kidneys have failed since the gas attack on Salt back in October, which was broadcast as the UK’s season finale last week.

Tane’s stalker tried to take him out, but while the Parata brother survived the attack without a scratch, it was Marilyn (Emily Simons) and Martha who carried most of the effects of the organophosphate. That left Marilyn (Emily Simons) with a transformed personality, and Martha needed a kidney transplant to avoid a life of dialysis.

In recent weeks, Roo (Georgie Parker) was revealed as a match for a transplant and welcomed the prospect of being able to put an end to his mother’s medical problems. However, Martha was reluctant to accept her daughter’s offer, as she did not want Roo to endure her own life with medical conditions.

After visiting a psychiatrist, Roo began to be in doubt about her own and did not know if she could take the risk of giving up one of her kidneys.

In the three-part special that brought the season to an end, Stewarts teamed up to make the big decision – would they go ahead with the transplant or not?

Alf went to church and asked God for help to support his family, “however it goes.”

Eventually, Roo decided to move on with the transplant, but just as they were on their way to the operating room, Martha announced that it would not continue. She simply can not take her daughter’s kidney.

What will that mean for Martha? Does she give up?

What does the future hold for Chloe after killing Matthew, and will Ryder and Theo survive their ordeal?
