Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has met with health experts to discuss how best to respond to a new variant of COVID-19 that has been discovered in South Africa, which he said was more contagious than the Delta strain.

“We are currently on the brink of a state of emergency,” Bennett said Friday, according to a statement from his office.

“Our main principle is to act fast, strong and now.”

Israel has reported a case of the new B.1.1.529 strain in a traveler returning from Malawi.

Two more people have been identified as possible cases and are awaiting test results, the Israeli Ministry of Health said.

They are in quarantine.

All three people have been vaccinated.

Several contacts are being sought after the three all returned to Israel from their travels abroad.

Israel announced on Thursday that it is banning its citizens from traveling to southern Africa and banning entry for foreigners from the region.
