Ole Gunnar Solskjær saw Manchester United’s win over Villarreal in the Champions League this week and was lifted by supporters shouting his name during the match.

United made the decision to fire Solskjær on Sunday after a series of five defeats out of their last seven Premier League matches.

Solskjær issued an apology to United’s traveling supporters in what turned out to be his last match when his team were beaten 4-1 by Watford on Saturday.

The Norwegian was hailed by United fans on Vicarage Road, but his name was sung by supporters who took the trip to Spain for their Champions League match with Villarreal on Tuesday night.

According to Andy Mitten, who spoke on The Athletics’ ‘Talk of the Devils’ podcast, Solskjær watched the match from his home and was’ absolutely buzzed’ by the fact that fans continued to sing their ‘You are my Solskjær’ song to his honor. even after his departure.

Michael Carrick has been hired temporarily after Solskjær’s exit, but United are now expected to appoint Ralf Rangnick as their interim manager for the rest of the season.

After the 2-0 victory over Villarreal, Carrick dedicated the result to Solskjær and defended his decision to accept to stay at United after the Norwegian’s departure.

‘It’s not an important result for me personally. That’s important for the players and the club, Carrick said.

– It is an important result for the players, tonight it is in no way about me.

‘It’s obviously been an emotional day. The first person I spoke to after Ed [Woodward] asked me to perform this role was Ole, to almost see what he thought about it because I felt it was the right thing to do.

‘I have a responsibility to be here and manage the team, and I take great pride in that.

“It was not about me tonight, though. It was about getting through [the group]. It was a massive match, when you get to this stage in the Champions League, it can swing so easily both ways, so it was important that we came here and got the right result, and we managed to do it, so I’m happy.’
