Samsung has just unveiled what could very well be its last phone in 2021, and while it will not compete with the Samsung Galaxy S21, it may have a shot at being one of the best cheap phones.
Named Samsung Galaxy A03, this follows the beginner level Samsung Galaxy A03s, which was announced in September, and it appears to be a bit taller than that phone – but still definitely on the affordable side.
It has a 6.5-inch HD + screen, a 5,000 mAh battery, a 48 MP main camera, a 2 MP depth sensor, a 5 MP front-facing camera, Dolby Atmos audio and an unnamed octa-core chipset.
According to an infographic, it is set to land in three different configurations – one with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage, one with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage and one with 4 GB RAM and 128 GB storage – although we would not expect all three models in all regions.
In terms of design, the Samsung Galaxy A03 has what appears to be a plastic housing in a choice of red, blue or black colors, and there is a notch at the top of the screen.
What we do not yet know is how much it will cost or where it will be available, but for reference, the Samsung Galaxy A03s landed in the UK at a price of £ 139 (around $ 195 / AU $ 260), so we would expect the Galaxy A03 to to cost a little more than that – but not much.
Analysis: Galaxy A03 has a lot of competition
Until we know the price, it will be hard to say for sure how appealing the Samsung Galaxy A03 will be, but its specifications are mostly uninspiring.
The battery is a reasonable size and its 48 MP camera may be fine, but in every other way it sounds extremely basic – which is fine if priced accordingly.
However, it must be very cheap (or perform better than the specifications suggest) to get near the top of our best cheap phone list, as handsets like the Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC with its 120Hz screen and the Moto G9 Power with its 6,000 mAh battery offer much more for not very much money.
