A boy in San Diego was fatally struck by a stray bullet while outside during a Thanksgiving gathering, his family said.
Angel Domingo Gaspar Gallegos, 12, was in the backyard of a home Thursday night with about a dozen of his cousins when the incident occurred, San Diego Union-Tribune reported.
“We thought my backyard was the safest place in the world for children to play,” Maria Gaspar, the boy’s aunt, said according to the newspaper.
After the boy was shot, his mother allegedly tried to stop the bleeding from his back when first aiders arrived.
Angel was later taken to a hospital where he died.
Gaspar said there were 40 members in the home for the holiday gathering. According to Union-Tribune, she said, the bullet appeared to be coming from a neighbor’s home.
Police investigating the incident said Friday they did not have a “suspicious description” to release yet, local news station Fox 5 reported.
“Detectives are trying to find evidence and any witnesses,” San Diego police lieutenant Adam Sharki said Friday, according to the station.
Police said Saturday they could not release any details about the ongoing investigation, adding that they did not know if the case would be a homicide or if it was an accidental gunshot.
Newsweek contacted San Diego police for further details and updates on their investigation, but did not return in time for publication Sunday afternoon.
A GoFundMe page created for Angel’s family said he was “born happy, happy and full of life.”
“He was taken from us prematurely at the age of 12. He was a wonderful older brother to Gabriel and sister Brianna and was loved by all who knew him,” the page read.
“While we were celebrating our family reunion in our backyard, a stray bullet came through our fence and hit him in the back. Family members came to his aid in an attempt to stabilize him until paramedics arrived. He was rushed to UCSD Hospital and unfortunately he bowed. under for his injuries and passed early Friday morning, “it continued.
