Australian star Dante Exum is close to signing a three-month contract with Barcelona, reports Chema de Lucas.

That comes after the former Pick 5 was given up by the Houston Rockets as a late roster ahead of the season, despite signing a three-year $ 8 million deal with the Texas franchise in September.

However, it was a non-guaranteed contract and the Rockets had 15 other players with guaranteed deals.

The 25-year-old’s last appearance in the NBA was for the Cleveland Cavaliers, for which he played six games last season before being traded to the Rockets in a four-team deal that sent former MVP James Harden to the Brooklyn Nets.

Exum’s NBA career has been marred by injuries and has played 245 games over seven seasons since the Utah Jazz hit him with the fifth overall pick in 2014.

But the 6-foot-5 guard etched his name in Australian basketball history at the Olympics in Tokyo – and played a key role from the bench in its bronze-winning campaign, where he averaged nine points and 2.8 assists in six matches.

Exum is expected to arrive in Spain next week to begin training with the EuroLeague and ACB powerhouse.

He will help fill in for injured Barcelona guard Nick Calathes, who is expected to remain out until the new year with a left fibula fracture.
