After nearly two years, the National Arts Center welcomes audiences back to the timeless story of the Nutcracker.

And artists could not be more excited to be back on stage, where all five shows this weekend are sold out.

12-year-old Findlay Davies, who plays Julien, has been a fan of The Nutcracker for as long as he can remember. He says the chance to appear in this show is a dream come true.

“It’s really nice to be here. It’s a special opportunity and it’s great to work with all the party dancers,” Davies says. “Throughout my younger childhood, I went to see this almost every year. And then being on stage and actually performing it for other people like me before, it’s really nice.”

The show is presented by Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet, with live music performed by the NAC Orchestra.

“This is the first time we’re doing a live performance with an orchestra,” says Andre Lewis, artistic director and CEO of RWB.

Lewis says the only change they had to make to the show was fewer kids.

“And it was more of a preventative measure for the first time back,” Lewis says. “So we did not want so many children backstage and on stage.”

Three children in total will appear in The Nutcracker, including 12-year-old Victoria Noisette, who plays the role of the main character Clara.

“I think it’s very special,” Noisette says. “Because there are only a few kids and I was chosen to be the lead role.”

For those lucky enough to get a ticket to this festive winter classic, it looks set to be as majestic as ever.

“The show has lost nothing of its beauty, nothing of its imagination, nothing of its magic,” Lewis says. “We’re so happy to be back. I think audiences are eager to come back. And just be a part of this wonderful art form.”

For the performers Davies and Noisette, as show time approaches, the nerves may set in, but they say they are ready.

“It’s our first show, so it’s a little nerve-wracking,” Noisette says. “But we can do this.”

The nutcracker runs until Sunday at the National Arts Center.
