Child in car during recording

The Coquitlam RCMP is investigating an overnight shooting that has left a man injured.

Police say the victim’s 9-year-old son, who was sitting in the back seat of the vehicle at the time of the shooting, but fortunately escaped unharmed.

On December 4, just after 4:30 p.m., police responded to a shot fired call in the 1600 block of Chickadee Place, Coquitlam.

Police say a victim was found and had received a gunshot wound.

He was transported to the hospital by Emergency Health Services, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and later released.

A silver-colored sedan was seen leaving the area immediately after the shooting.

The Coquitlam RCMP Major Crime Unit appeals to members of the public who may have been in the Westwood Plateau area and surrounding areas between 4:20 pm and 5:20 pm for any dashcam video, housing video, or any other information that might help with this examination.

At present, police say there is not enough information to rule out or link this incident to the ongoing gang conflict on the lower mainland, but police do not believe this was a completely random act.

“As you can understand, this incident took place a little over 24 hours ago and it is far too early to speculate on motive or associations,” said Corporal Paige Kuz, media chief. “We know this is a disturbing event in our community and we are working hard to gather facts and evidence so that we can find those responsible for this incident,” said Corporal Kuz.

If anyone has information, they are asked to call the Coquitlam RCMP Department at 604-945-1550 and ask to speak to the Department of Major Crime.
