4 island business leaders named Order of Canada

Two island power pairs are among the 135 nominees who were named Order of Canada on Wednesday.

Kevin and Kathy Murphy and John and Hazel Robinson have been awarded one of Canada’s most important civilian honors, which is intended to recognize unique contributions from individuals to the country.

This year’s list of nominees, which was announced by Governor – General Mary Simon, includes Canadian dignitaries such as former Senator Murray Sinclair and novelist Yann Martel.

The Murphy family was named to the Order for their leadership in conservation and tourism at PEI, as well as for “their mentorship of entrepreneurs in the hospitality industry,” according to a press release.

The couple are the founders of the Murphy Hospitality Group, which operates restaurants and two boutique hotels in the province, as well as the Prince Edward Island Brewing Company. They have been in the hotel business for more than 40 years.

Robinsons was named for their “leadership in Prince Edward Island’s agricultural industry and for their contribution to documenting local history in the community.”

The Robinson family has run the agricultural business Eric C. Robinson Inc. for generations. John and Hazel have been involved in several charitable initiatives, and in the 1990s they published a community story about North Tryon, which took a decade to compile.

Receives ‘overwhelmed’ by induction

He said he is “overwhelmed” by the honor.

“And almost a little embarrassed to be selected over so many other amazing people who are on the island and doing such great things in our community,” he said.

Hazel noted that the motto of the Canadian Order is “to wish a better country.”

“I know it was in the Robinson family before I started a family, and when you work with people like that, it’s not hard work. It’s fun work,” she said.

“There are times when things can be difficult. But overall, those are not the things you remember. You remember the good times.”
