Football Ghana reports that Arsenal’s Thomas Partey is ready to face Manchester City in January before joining Ghana for AFCON.

The AP previously reported that European clubs are now allowed to postpone the release of players to the Africa Cup of Nations squads until January 3 following a decision by the Confederations of African Football.

Initially, all players involved in the tournament had to leave on December 27, meaning Thomas Partey, Nicolas Pepe, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mohamed Elneny all had to leave before the matches against Wolves and Manchester City.

The Wolves match ended up being postponed anyway, but it still left a clash with the league leaders on January 1st.

Although FIFA and CAF will allow Partey to stay on until the Manchester City match, Ghana Football Association was still within their right to decide to call him early.

Ghana are playing their first AFCON game on January 10, so a release on January 3 would still give Partey a week of preparation time. It seems that they have decided that it is long enough for him to stay at Arsenal for City.

Pepe (Ivory Coast) and Elneny (Egypt) have also been involved with Arsenal over the last couple of matches, so Mikel Arteta may want them around for the City match. We do not yet know if they will be.

But it seems unlikely that Arsenal will bother to negotiate a late departure for Aubameyang to Gabon. The striker is not playing anyway, so he might as well start preparing for AFCON with his country.
