If there is any truth in the phrase ‘Where there is smoke, there is fire’, then someone would rather send a fire truck to Toronto FC’s headquarters right away.

More and more reports are coming out of Europe suggesting that Napoli star Lorenzo Insigne has made a deal to play with TFC next season or at least has been offered a big money contract by the Major League Soccer club.

Even TFC center-back Chris Mavinga got started, tweeting Tuesday, “Hey @TorontoFC, twitter is burning! Please announce Insigne.”

Italian media SportMediaset reported this week that an agreement has been reached and that the winger, who has scored 89 goals for Napoli and 10 for Italy, will join the Reds in 2022.

The Guardians’ Fabrizio Romano reports that Insigne, a Euro 2020 winner with Italy, is seriously considering accepting TFC’s offer of € 11.5 million per season.

Sky Sport Italia said the 30-year-old Insigne is ‘tempted’ by an offer from TFC pushing for a January transfer and that he would reportedly earn € 9.5 million a year ($ 13 million) in five seasons. Insigne is out of contract on 30 June 2022. The Italian national team player has also been linked with Inter and Tottenham.

There has reportedly been an ‘exchange of information; between Insigne and four different Serie A clubs, including Inter, Juventus, AC Milan and Lazio.

The TFC management continues to refuse to comment on the “speculation” surrounding Insigne, although it must be said that the front office has not shot down the reports that the club has offered Insigne a huge contract down. The club will not announce any new Designated Player signings until it moves one or two of its current DPs, either Jozy Altidore or Yeferson Soteldo. Each MLS club has three DPs and Toronto has three under contract (the third is Alejandro Pozuelo). Last week, Sao Paulo football director Carlos Belmonte told BandSports: “By talking to Toronto, we learned that there was no intention for them to lend Soteldo just to negotiate a permanent deal. It cooled the negotiations a bit, but we do not exclude him. “

Also coming out of Europe this week, there are various reports linking the TFC with Andrea Belotti, striker and captain for Torino, who is out of contract in 2022, as well as Genoa striker Mattia Destro… while the silly season continues.
On Tuesday, there were reports that TFC has also expressed interest in Spanish winger Jesús Jiménez, 28, who currently plays for Górnik Zabrze in the Polish Ekstraklasa. Jiménez also played in the third row of Spanish football, but has been a prolific goal scorer no matter where he has played.

A TFC source said the club are close to repurchasing Brampton striker Ayo Akinola, 21, and that could be confirmed as early as this week
