Michael Owen has made his predictions for a number of midweek matches, including Chelsea’s showdown against Brighton, Manchester City’s trip to Brentford and Manchester United’s meeting with Burnley.

The title race took another twist on Tuesday night as Liverpool fell to a 1-0 defeat to Leicester at King Power Stadium.

The result means the Reds remain six points behind the reigning Premier League champions, while Chelsea remain on par with Jurgen Klopp’s team.

The Thomas Tuchels Blues returned from successive draws in the league to pick up an important win against Aston Villa on Christmas Day.

Next, West London host Brighton at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night, and Owen expects another win for the home side.

“It was not an easy match, but it was a huge win for Chelsea against Villa,” Owen told BetVictor.

‘[Romelu] Lukaku has not been at his best lately, but he looked fantastic against Villa. He is so fast, so strong, and his movement gave the Villa defense all sorts of problems. Chelsea look from a completely different side when he is in that mood.

‘Brighton have had a tough game, so winning over Brentford will be a relief for Graham Potter. Those were two very successful goals and Neal Maupay now has seven for the season. He is an underrated striker and can be a real handful.

‘I would expect to see a Chelsea win here. It will not be emphatic, Brighton are too organized, but Chelsea get a few goals. 2-0 Chelsea. ‘

City have the option of extending their lead over Liverpool to nine points when they go away to Brentford on Wednesday night, and Owen thinks that is exactly what the formal champions will do.

‘Brentford did not play badly against Brighton and it was a very even match. However, they did not create enough. I like Ivan Toney, he is a calm, composed finisher. However, he needs service, the former Liverpool striker added.

‘I’ve been saying this for weeks now, City in this form are almost unstoppable. They completely dominate play and the movement and quality of their players in the final third is excellent. Pep would have been annoyed at having conceded a couple of goals into the second half, but it was yet another fantastic performance.

‘I can only see that this is going one way. Brentford still have a hard time scoring, but against City it is a big question. I predict a 3-0 victory for Man City. ‘

United delivered an overwhelming display on Monday night’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick admitted he ‘did not like the performance’, but Owen believes the German team will respond to Burnley at Old Trafford on Thursday.

‘I expected more from United against Newcastle. Considering they had two weeks off, it was a disappointing performance. If they play like that, there is no way they will get in the top four. I would expect an answer here at Old Trafford, Owen continued.

“I’m sure Sean Dyche will look to get some new faces at the club in January, especially now that they have some matches in hand. They will go to Old Trafford and try to frustrate United, keeping the game as close as possible. However, I am concerned about the lack of quality in this site.

‘I do not see United destroying Burnley; Burnley is too organized for that. However, I think they will win, 2-1 Man United. ‘
