Nigel de Jong does not think so Manchester United finish in the Champions League places this season and support Arsenal or West Ham to secure a fourth place.

United have gone undefeated in Ralf Rangnick’s first four games at Old Trafford, but they have yet to impress under the German.

The interim boss has overseen two 1-0 wins and two 1-1 draws, most recently an uninspiring show against Newcastle where Edinson Cavani came off the bench to save a point.

Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea look set to battle for the title this season, though Pep Guardiola’s side have opened a six-point gap at the top.

However, fourth place seems to be on the line, with Arsenal taking the position on the way into the new year.

Behind the Gunners in fifth place is West Ham, while Tottenham in sixth place and United in seventh place have two games left.

At the end of the season, former City midfielder De Jong believes United will fall short and that Arsenal and Hammers will be the two teams vying for fourth place.

‘I can not see Man United finishing in fourth place this season, although they are currently favorites behind Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea to do so; I really do not. I think it will be a match between Arsenal and West Ham, “said De Jong, who spoke exclusively to Ladbrokes at the launch of the 5-A-Side bet on Arsenal against Man City.

‘Arsenal are doing well but there is still a long way to go this season; I’m not sure they can maintain this shape over the course of the season. That said, they do not have to worry about European football, so they have very little in the way of distractions over the next few months.

‘They have some amazing young children who are constantly building on their experiences. Obviously their current problem with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is not helping things, so I can see them getting rid of him in January. I think they could manage to pick up two or three more players in January.

‘I like Arsenal; they may be a positive force in the second half of the season, but the only way I see them doing that is by picking up a few players for next month.

– There is a long time between now and the end of the season, and there is a lot of football to be played in that time. If they do, then they have every chance of finishing in the top four. ‘

“Man United have a bigger problem for me. I think there’s a big problem around the egos there and how Ralf Rangnick can hold it all. The majority of these players are aged 28 and over, so he has a big problem to keep everyone under control.I do not see them competing for fourth place, De Jong added.

– I would say it is between Arsenal and West Ham. I really like David Moyes. If he can keep getting that kind of performance out of his players, there’s no reason why they can not be up there at the end of the season. I just hope no clubs go shopping in January for key members of his team.

‘If he can keep that team together and maybe get a few more names in, I see them and Arsenal go for fourth place.’
