Police are investigating massive Belconnen explosion

Police are investigating an explosion in Rae Street, Belconnen, which last night destroyed a kebab shop, the supermarket next door and several other shops in the area, as well as broken glass more than 100 meters away.

ACT Fire and Rescue was called to the Turkish kebab and pizza shop around 7.30pm last night after reports that the building was on fire.

More than five fire extinguishers were present to put out the fire. An air platform was used due to concerns about the structural integrity of the building.

While the full extent of the damage is still being determined, several premises were destroyed by the fire and other shops nearby suffered significant fire and smoke damage.

Firefighters made the scene safe, and around 9:30 p.m., it was handed over to ACT Policing to begin investigations to determine the cause of the incident.

According to ACT Fire and Rescue, neither the kebab shop nor the neighboring supermarket was open at the time. A man was rushed to hospital with non-critical injuries. No further details have been released about his injuries.

Several roads in the area are expected to remain closed today.
