Pucovski describes frustration as he plays return

Will Pucovski has described his frustrating battle with concussion, but the Victorian dough is still heading towards a low-key return to cricket in January.

The 23-year-old has been out of the game since suffering his 10th concussion during a training session in October.

A blow to the head in the nets cost Australia’s young batting star any chance of getting involved in Ashes this summer.

Pucovski impressed with 62 on his Test debut against India in January, but a shoulder injury and several concussion problems have kept his promising international career to just one appearance.

In an honest discussion during a BBL commentary effort, Pucovski explained that he was not afraid to face short bowling.

He added that he has been beaten on the helmet while hitting an “average” amount, but his history of concussion – the first of which came during a football match as a teenager – means that every blow to the head has a longer lasting effect compared to others players.

“What can sometimes confuse me is that you get this big story about ‘he can’t play the short ball,'” Pucovski told Seven Network.

“In every (Sheffield) Shield game I play as soon as I reach 10 or 15, it’s the short ball plan because I’ve obviously had this story.

“I’ve had quite a bit of success with it and I’ve played a lot of cricket.

“I’m pretty sure how I approach it.

“I just find it more frustrating when I get hit, I get symptoms a lot of the time.

“That’s the thing I guess the most because I’m sitting there saying, ‘I just wanted to get hit, and I keep hitting.'”

Pucovski will line up for Melbourne in Victorian Premier Cricket in the coming weeks in an attempt to build enough momentum ahead of the return of Shield cricket after BBL ends on 28 January.

“I can’t wait to get out of the nets,” he said.

“It will be good to have fighting action and get back into it.”

In 24 first-class matches, Pucovski has an average of 53.41 with six centuries and a highest score of 255 not out.
