In the last week, my family and I have started a new texting thread. It is a sacred space. Each message is typically three words long, something along those lines “Word at three. “Yes, like many others on social media and beyond, we have discovered Wordle, a simple word game that has one puzzle – the same for everyone – to play daily. You just have to guess a single word and you have six attempts.
The game has been running for almost 200 days, but it’s really picked up speed over the past week, and it’s easy to see why.
It’s hard, but not too hard. You do not have to be especially smart to be good at it, but it definitely makes you feel as the wisest person ever. There is also nothing to download. You just open it in your browser. Because it’s the same puzzle for everyone, there’s a way you can directly compare yourself to others: a low-stakes competition that’s nice and not demoralizing. A lot of Polygon employees discovered the game today – you’re welcome – and we are all anxiously awaiting tomorrow’s words.
Here are the rules:
- Just guess a word. Any word with five letters.
- Hints appear after each word guess, which shows whether letters are in the right place, in the word, but in the wrong place, or not at all in the word.
- Using these tips, make another guess and repeat until you have the word – or do not understand the word, and lose.
There is also a tough mode for players who want more of a challenge: At the top right of the screen in the browser there is a gear. Click on it, then click on the slider to switch to hard mode, which means you have to follow the tips you’ve revealed – and not just enter random words to find out more letters or spots.
Creator Josh Wardle added a smart share button that makes it easy to share your guesses without spoilers, creating the cute emoji boards you’ve probably seen on social media. By clicking on part, you simply save these emojis on your clipboard, and you can then boast of your word game skills on social media or in Wordle text threads. One puzzle a day is both a bummer and the most important thing about it: It makes every morning special, just like the time to play Wordle a small event we are all waiting for.
Nevertheless, Wordle i fire.
