Oh, New Year’s Eve. It can be stressful to decide where and how to spend the last hours of the year, even in normal times, but right now it seems hard to plan a big party.
Whether you choose to have a low-key NYE this year, or you want a solid backup plan (what happens, Omicron!), You can do much worse than stay in and get a very good takeaway. To save you from thoughtlessly scrolling through Deliveroo or UberEats at. 19:00 on December 31, we have gathered some of the best options for an indulgent meal that you do not have to cook or wash up after.
This fine Chinatown venue is open until 6 p.m. 23:00 at NYE, giving you plenty of time to order one of its excellent set menus for two. There’s a Chef’s Special menu with chili-and-garlic-fried spare ribs and sweet chili kung po chicken, or try Classic Canton if you want your last meal of 2021 to involve crispy duck with pancakes. There is also a veggie option and a Sichuan menu as well as lots of delicious dishes on the main menu, including dim sum plates, which is never a bad idea.
Want to look year-round with a fried chicken feast? Give the Colonel a wide berth and beat up the excellent Chick ‘n’ Sours instead. There are branches in Seven Dials, Haggerston and Whitechapel. If you want minimal decision making, or to avoid a long discussion with your peers about what to get, there are various meal options that mean you can try all the big hits. Do not miss the excellent disco wings.
Okay, a pizza may not seem so indulgent to NYE, but have you seen the size of Yard Sale’s? You can choose between 12-inch or 18-inch, but it is clear that you need to go big for the last night of the year. This ever-growing London favorite has branches all over the city, in Finsbury Park, Clapton, Walthamstow, Leytonstone, Hackney Road, East Dulwich, Balham, Crystal Palace and Crofton Park. No order is complete without its pizza bread with cheese and marmit garlic, which you can currently get as an 18-inch, thanks to a special collaboration with the Off Menu podcast boys. That’s the least you deserve.
From the crew behind Gymkhana and Hoppers, Motu serves Indian Kitchen, which is for delivery only – in its words – “indulgent homemade Indian food”. Conveniently, it has locations in Battersea, Bermondsey, Whitechapel, Swiss Cottage, Crouch End, Islington, Canary Wharf and Wandsworth, meaning Londoners all over the city can get their fix of Motu’s excellent chicken curry or black dhal. There are also set menus to choose from if you want a taste of it all.
If you want to end the year with a bang, then Napoli Gang has you covered. From the folks behind Gloria and Circolo Popolare, this is the group’s delivery offer. While your cozy apartment may not have the same OTT decor as the restaurants, you can order some of the culets for your door, including the decadent multi-layered lasagna and super-rich tiramisu. If you have underestimated your booze needs, it can also deliver on that front.
